Somali Ethnic Studies provides educators and students with meaningful, culturally responsive learning materials that explore Somali history, geography, culture, identity, and heritage.
Our curriculum gives teachers the resources they need to bring Somali perspectives into the classroom and help students develop a deeper understanding of the Somali people and their contributions to the history and culture of the Horn of Africa and the wider world.
Bringing Somali History Into the Classroom
For generations, Somali history and cultural experiences have often received limited representation in mainstream educational materials. Somali Ethnic Studies seeks to help change that by providing educators with accessible, engaging, and thoughtfully developed curriculum materials.
Our approximately nine-week curriculum introduces students to Somali history, geography, and culture from ancient times through the beginning of the 20th century. The curriculum can be taught sequentially or adapted into individual lessons based on classroom needs.
Students explore the people, places, traditions, systems, and historical events that have shaped Somali communities and identity.
